After the three days, your baby recovers to a normal body temperature in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with continuous EEG (electroencephalogram) neuromonitoring. Cooling therapy, also called neonatal or therapeutic hypothermia, is one of the most effective treatments for HIE when administered properly. Cooling the baby’s body and brain temperature in a controlled environment alters chemical processes in the brain, thus reducing the risk of permanent brain damage. In the rare event an emergency occurs, our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) offers total body cooling for newborns – the only therapy currently shown to reduce brain damage if started in the first six hours of life. Brain hypothermia, induced by cooling a baby to around 33 °C for three days after birth, is a treatment for hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy.

:) -Cara"He will If you end up delivering your baby prematurely, or before 37 weeks, your little one may need to spend some time in the neonatal intensive care unit, or NICU. One out of 10 babies are born prematurely. The sight of a frail, tiny infant sleeping in a plexiglass case can be terrifying to new parents. Don’t forget to subscribe!! Every baby in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) has an individual bedside nurse. This nurse is highly qualified, having done extra study in nursing newborn babies, on top of a nursing degree.
Your baby's temperature will be lowered, slowly and safely, to 92 degrees Fahrenheit (33.5 degrees Celsius). By maintaining this temperature for three days, your baby's metabolic processes slow. A baby can be wrapped in the blanket within minutes or hours after birth. The blanket is kept on the baby for up to 72 hours during his or her stay in the NICU, after which the baby is slowly re-warmed to natural body temperature. During the course of the therapy, some babies can be held by their parents, which facilitates bonding.
